Fuel Prices

What's up with fuel prices and fuel economy?

Why is it that gas prices are allowed to go up just prior to weekends, holidays and rumors of bad news?

Isn't there any real competition, or do the gas stations team together, call each other or have some sort of understanding that allows them to raise and lower prices all at one time.  How do they even know what the other companies are charging so fast?

By the way, why are the new 2002 and 2003 trucks and SUV vehicle getting such poor fuel economy?

My new 2002 Jeep Wrangler's window sticker stated 17 mpg highway, when in reality it only gets 12 mpg highway and 9 city, it's a 6 cylinder and has no real performance?  I think it only weighs 2200 lbs!  Shouldn't the gutless wonder get at least 22 highway?  I have also heard many people speak of their large SUVs getting similar fuel economy, you know, the 10-15 range highway.  So whatever happened to the mandatory fuel economy regulations?  Is this just another American, good idea that we just trough away?

While I'm complaining about fuel cost, I'm wondering why I just purchased a new 'high efficiency" furnace for $3200.00, just to see our furnace bill drop by  $2.00 a month?  The sad thing was the old furnace heated the house faster and blew real heat out of the registors, while our new furnace takes forever to change the temperature and blows air that is just slightly above room temp.

By the way, didn't I just hear President Bush's State of the Union Address in which he seemed to announce clean burning fuel engines for automobiles?  It struck me strange to hear this when these vehicle have been around for years.  Why is it that we always have to wait until we have oil problems before we start thinking and talking about conserving fuel?
